I’ve just started getting into Stars Without Number, and I have to say I’ve gone a little crazy. The system allows me the freedom I have been looking for in a sci-fi setting.

Naturally, I started creating new material like I do for most of the tabletop RPGs I play. Below are some new backgrounds and training packages that I put together.

Backgrounds

Media Personality

  • Whether a singer, news anchor, talk show host, DJ, or actor, planets and systems have their stars. You’ve seen ups and downs -all in the public eye. Now, it’s time to find new markets for your talents.
  • Skills: Culture/Any, Culture/World, Persuade, Profession/Any

Athlete

  • Whether you’ve won championships or not. No matter how your sports career turned out, it’s time to explore new opportunities.
  • Skills: Athletics, Culture/World, Gambling, Profession/Any (for sports like baseball, track and field, or grav-ball, etc.) OR Combat/Unarmed (for boxing, or MMA, etc.) OR Combat/Primitive (for fencing, or archery, etc.)

Sycophant

  • Every large organization has its boot lickers, and you happen to be one of them. Your flattery has worn your welcome thin, so it’s time to seek a new direction among the stars.
  • Skills: Bureaucracy, Culture/World, Steward, Profession/Any (if in the corporate world) OR Religion (if in the church)

Journalist

  • All you need is one big story. That will show your family, friends, and co-workers you are a serious journalist. This planet is boring. The real scoops are waiting in space.
  • Skills: Culture/World, History, Perception, Profession/Journalism

Amanuensis

  • You served your master well. You copied and dictated day after day until your hand ached from the writing. That life is all gone now. Swept away. Perhaps your master died or lost his position. Whatever the reason, the stars are now calling you.
  • Skills: Culture/World, Perception, Profession/Scribe, Religion

Apothecary

  • Your home planet may be a bit primitive, but you’ve studied and learned how to mix medicines. More people should have access to these wonders.
  • Skills: Business, Culture/World, Science, Tech/Medical

Expert Training Packages

Diplomat

  • The conflict between planets and systems means there is always a market for agents, negotiators, or freelance troubleshooters. A smooth-talking diplomat with a good reputation can be worth fortunes to a planet or system with a problem that needs to be solved.

Business Leader

  • Business makes the world go around, or in this case, the entire sector. Individuals who have mastered the nuances of commerce always have options.

Financier

  • Moving money has never been easier, or more critical. A professional financier can handle large sums of money for organizations or governments, build investing groups, and so much more.

Info Broker

  • Sir Francis Bacon said knowledge is power. He had no idea. One scrap of data can end wars, or start them. One tidbit of info can cause governments to fall, or sweep new ones into power. Fortunately, you collect those bits and they can be had for only a nominal handling fee.

Free Trader

  • It takes a special breed to strike out on their own among the stars, but there is no substitute for the freedom.

Metatron

  • You are the keeper of sacred texts and the recorder of great deeds. Your mission takes you from world to world for your sect.

Hacker

  • The grid was made to be hacked, so someone has to do it. Whether it’s governments or criminal organizations, these types of services are always in demand.

Criminal Doctor

  • Classy con men, street thugs, or crime bosses have two things in common: they all get sick and they all bleed. That’s where you come in. Treating a certain clientele does have advantages since discretion comes at a price.
