Johnny Mnemonic: 1995 Cyberpunk

Johnny Mnemonic: 1995 Cyberpunk

Another Dose of ’90s Cyberpunk

This time from one of the genre’s founding authors, William Gibson. If you like your cyberpunk with calling cards, pay phones, and Concorde jets, this is for you. It also features a cybernetic dolphin, a cybernetic Dolph Lundgren, the beautiful Dina Meyer, Ice-T, and of course, a pre-Matrix Keanu Reeves.

I was one of the few people who saw Johnny Mnemonic in the theater. While not awesome, it’s a film that has stuck with me over the years. I’m not ignoring its flaws, but in spite of them, the movie had some interesting ideas. Some may say it’s bad, but I think it’s worth watching and entertaining to boot. Now, it has also become a window into what we thought the internet would be 30 years ago.
