Fragged Empire – Creator Interview

The Post, Post Apocalypse Role-Playing Game

Fragged Empire has been gaining a lot of steam lately. I checked in with the creator and designer for a quick chat.

Fragged Empire RPGWhen did you begin playing role-playing games?

I remember my very first role playing game was 2nd D&D when I was about 13 at a mates place with some of his older family friends. At the time my parents and I were new Christians and my father had heard a lot of mixed “D&D is bad” messages, so I didn’t get to play another role playing game for some time.

When I did start playing again, my friends and I really got into the Hero system. And that was our staple game system for my teen years.

When and why did you create Fragged Empire?

Fragged started out as a homebrew setting between myself and some friends back in 2008, but I didn’t really start making it into its own system until I moved out of my country town to the city in 2010. I didn’t know a lot of people and I had a lot of spare time on my hands so I kinda worked on this project just for fun. 6 years later it is now my full time job.

RPGCan you explain the setting of Fragged Empire?

Sure, it’s a gritty sci-fi ‘post, post-apocalyptic’ setting focused around the cultural tension of 8 non-human races that have just recently re-emerged back to the stars after 100 years of brutal tribalism after a great genocidal war.

It’s got a ‘dawn of a new era’ feel about it, with lots of exploration, and cultural tension.

What's the rules system like?

It’s a 3d6 system (roll 3d6 +bonus vs a TN, each “6” you roll allows you to do something special), that’s a little on the crunchy side (character creation can take a little while but once a game session starts you shouldn’t need to refer to the rule book at all).

There are no classes, detailed rules for tactical miniature combat, and a emphasis on a PCs vocation (trading, research, etc…).

What sets Fragged Empire apart from other RPGs?

It’s a very deep setting and rule system. While many indie RPGs are very rules light and many professional titles are remakes and/or sequels; my game aim to be new, with its own original setting and rule system.

If you like RPG with depth, and that are designed for long campaigns, then Fragged might be a good fit for you.

RPGTell us about the recent Kickstarter.

The recent Kickstarter was for an expansion; the Protagonist Archive (4 new playable races) and a range of high quality resin minis. We just finished the other day at over double the goal I was aiming for (we were just shy of $75k).

How can people get their hands on Fragged Empire?

Through my website: www.fraggedempire.com, and I will be taking pre-orders for my expansion (and minis) soon 🙂

What does the future hold?

Currently I have at least a dozen projects on the go (a miniatures skirmish game, a light card based RPG, 3 new settings, a board games, etc…). I can’t say for sure what one will be next but I dare say the next 12 months will be very exciting. I’m eager to broaden my product range, not only for business stability reasons, but also because I just love to make cool things 😀
